Top 10 Vintage Holiday Velvets
Why vintage velvets (and velveteens) are a great choice for your next winter party
Velvets (and their close relative velveteen) have been a go-to for holiday and winter party outfits for decades - and for good reason! Velvet garments are truly beautiful pieces, capturing the light in all the right ways. Typically easy to wear and accessorize, velvets are often less likely to wrinkle compared to other fabrics. Velvet garments tend to be warm, while not being too heavy. Vintage pieces in particular are special, as the velvets tend to be made from quality fabrics including light weight and draping silken velvets or a low pile cotton velveteen (my personal favorite given how easy it is to hand wash). Often found in classic silhouettes and gemstone colors, these pieces give you an air of elegance while also feeling luxurious! You can’t help but feel like a royal . . . or at least look like one. The Oldies
The oldest pieces always take the cake in my opinion. Usually made from quality silk velvet, the silhouettes are timeless and classy. These beauties usually come in the most stunning of jewel tone colors.
1 - One of my all time favorite dresses - A 1930s velvet gown in the prettiest burgundy wine color. This glamorous little number drapes and hugs those curves in all the right ways - plus you’ll look like an old Hollywood movie star!
2 - Classic elegance starts with this easy to wear and accessorize 1940s blue velvet cocktail dress. Its construction suggests early 40s, likely from the war years.
3- Simple and understated elegance . . . and surely a crowd pleaser! This gorgeous 1940s cocktail dress comes in a rich brown tone. It would be wonderful to pair with some gold statement jewelry!
Fit and Flares
These flirty little pieces make dancing a breeze! Even if dancing is not your jam, you cant help but twirl in these fun dresses. Just grab a friend and spin, the dress will take care of the rest!
4- A great 1950s velveteen number - the full skirt of this piece makes twirling a breeze! Between the vibrant blue color and the fun silhouette, you know this dress knows how to party!
5 - This stunning 1960s cocktail dress is super unique! The bodice is comprised of a lovely black velvet, but it then flares out into a unique psychedelic print skirt.
Separates
Layer and style your velvets (or velveteens) with other pieces too! Starting off with an elegant vintage velvet top or bottom makes it easy to add and layer other pieces. For a truly fun look - try adding lurex, tinsel or sequins to your velvets for that extra holiday shine!
6 - One of the coolest pieces I have ever found is this gorgeous 1950s coral pink velveteen party top. The off the shoulder look is so elegant and the top looks good tucked in or out of you favorite bottoms!
7 - Eyes on you . . . BUT in a good way! This fun and bright purple skirt has a matching belt with rhinestone buttons! The piece is constructed in a beautiful manner, exhibiting the loveliest gathering at the sides.
8 - For a classic vintage 1950s look you can wear again and again, look no further than this “Cadillac Originals” Black Velvet blouse. The brand is unique in that it was upscale clothing sold at the dealerships in the 1950s and 1960s for Cadillac cars!
Classic Holiday Colors
You can’t have a holiday party without at least a little bit of red and green velvet mixed in! These classic Christmas colors will surely be a hit for your holiday gathering. Even if you don’t celebrate, you can wear them as stylish winter staples.
9 - This lovely late 50s dress is perfect for the holidays! It has a lovely velveteen bodice with a flocked velvet floral details upon the skirt. The red and white combination creates a classic holiday look.
10 - Emerald Green velvet is always a good idea! This late 70s or early 80s dress features such a lovely silhouette - it has an almost 1930s look to it with the belt and the sleeves! A great choice for any holiday host!
BONUS
Just because I love velvets and velveteens . . . here’s one of my shop favorites!
This 1960s Lanz Original dress is perfect for any winter party look. Its “holiday” look is understated, meaning it could easily be worn for other occasions like a night out or possibly even valentines day! The black velveteen bodice is so simple and features a low back to give it that little extra “oomph”. The bodice was creatively off set by the lovely black and red brocade skirt - simple and lovely!
